If staying alive despite a dwindling habitat, scarce natural staples, singleminded persecution, and less then hospitable circumstances in which to reproduce and raise its young describes a survivor, then this title fits the wolf. No other wild predator across the continents has been under such an organized effort to eradicate its presence. None is more hated and feared. Its nemesis, man, has been the main cause of both its plight and the fear its very presence creates. In the last few decades, however, much has changed. A new awareness, born from close studies clearly shows how vital this unique animal is to the ecological balance of the wilderness. Across the U.S. and Canada, this "survivor", the beautiful wolf, now enjoys a new lease on life and is thriving.
