A pile of pigs clamber over their trough of mass-produced “McSwill”
feed. Look for one pig smoking
a pipe and another with a cigarette clutched in its trotter. These
items are for the production of smoked
hams and bacon. On the interior is an empty pen with a sign indicating
that the residents have been sent
off to slaughter. Peter’s ambivalent feelings about bacon are also
carved on the interior. On the inside
of the lid is the inscription “fox,” inspired by the foxes who have
taken up residence in the Calvesberts’
garden. “H/D” stands for “hawks and doves,” a term which the media
has used frequently in the recent
stand-off with Iraq. The mouse can be seen beneath the trough.
