Remember those old films, where a scorpion would crawl into someone's
shoe, and then in the morning
the victim would put on his shoes without checking them? Even now,
if artist Peter Calvesbert puts his foot
in his shoe and feels something inside, he imagines it is something
far worse than the Lego brick that it invariably
turns out to be. The shoe is Peter's, a size nine. During carving,
the capture of Saddam Hussein was announced.
He was found near Tikrit, which Peter's neighbor misheard as "near
to Crete." So the interior became Saddam's
bunker, complete with suitcase of cash, pistol, Mars bars, extractor
fan and a holiday brochure for Crete
(for Peter's neighbor).
