Five lionesses and one lion slumber in a relaxed group, unaware that
a sleepwalking antelope
has wandered into their midst. The mouse is hidden in the lion’s mane.
Savanna grass,
a snakeskin, and lion footprints are carved on the inside of the figurine.
Inscribed on the lip
of the lid is the warning “THE DANGER OF SLEEPWALKING.” The inscription
“Martha’s Son” refers to a racehorse on which Peter bet during the
local Cheltenham
Gold Cup Week. Carved into the bottom rim of the base are the initials
“HB” and an
image of a comet to commemorate the Hale Bopp Comet of 1997. The little
house is
the one that Peter and Andrea almost bought while he was working on
this piece.
