This crocodile box figurine harkens back to the original – not to the
200 million year old reptile
but to “Swamp Song”, one of HK’s earliest pieces. Unlike “Swamp Song”,
here the crocodiles face
their audience instead of each other. Notice their accouterment – a
handbag, waistcoat and pair
of shoes – all made of crocodile skin! Because of overhunting, most
crocodiles are endangered,
but this hasn’t discouraged illicit trade in their skin. Peter’s signature
mouse peeks out of a
bullet hole found on the purse. Cango, carved into the lid, is a South
African crocodile farm
to which Peter took his wife on their honeymoon. The interior features
a semi-submerged croc.
